Map Asset Types and How to Make Them
Create terrain, linear, prop, background, and tile assets that work correctly in each map mode.
Terrain assets
Terrain is an area-filling material such as grass, dirt, sand, snow, stone, or water. Generate one square tile using the Texture preset and Tileable option. Avoid landmarks, borders, roads, or multiple terrain types in the same base image. Assign the Terrain role, then build the tileset so transition variants can be produced.
Linear assets
Linear assets form connected paths such as roads, rivers, walls, fences, tracks, or cliffs. Generate a clean representative segment with consistent width and direction. Assign Linear so the tileset builder can create straight, corner, end, and intersection variants according to the selected complexity.
Props
Props are discrete objects placed above terrain: trees, rocks, buildings, signs, furniture, bridges, and decorations. Generate one isolated object with a removable background and projection matching the map. Assign Props and set its width-by-height footprint in map cells. The footprint controls placement and erasing, not the source image dimensions.
Side-scroll backgrounds
Background assets are wide scenery segments. Use a horizontally tileable or parallax workflow, keep the horizon stable, and avoid hard visual discontinuities at the left and right edges. Assign BG in a side-scroll project.
Side-scroll tile segments
Tiles are playable or decorative segment-grid content used over the background strip. They may represent ground, platforms, walls, or repeating structures. Match the project tile dimensions and side-view perspective.
Asset creation checklist
- Create one visual concept per asset.
- Match the project projection and tile scale.
- Use transparent backgrounds for props.
- Use tileability for repeating terrain and scenery.
- Assign the role after reviewing the generated image.
- Rebuild the tileset when terrain or linear sources change.
